Creating Spaces
Space and time… at times I’m fighting for space. As an artist, I’m always vying for time.
Having a designated place to create is a necessity for continuing on in art. Even a child will find a place in a room, outside, or a section of the living room floor to make their own for the creative endeavor they are beginning. You get the idea. You were once there.
When my son was young, I briefly worked in pastels. At the time I thought they’d be the safest to leave out when quitting time hit each day. I would sit at everything from a coffee table in the living room to (later) a desk in a spare bedroom. Then we downsized houses and an easel in the corner of my kitchen became my creative space. A few years ago, we created my studio room. I can’t say how invaluable only having to cover my palette and wash my brushes is at the end of the day. No more moving the easel, losing leftover paint, and all the other time (and money) suck inconveniences that used to work against me when time was short. How easy it was to just say “I’ll paint tomorrow”. Don’t get me wrong. We all have times in our lives when we must fight for time and space to create. Even with a designated space to create there will be obstacles and distractions to conquering the required time to create. It appears everything that can be a distraction will show up. It is crucial to set our minds and determine ourselves to persevere. It’s the ability to keep going when others quit that grants the privilege of going deeper and staying on the path. Are we aiming for the destination or the ability to pursue it in the journey? Maybe both? I want to reach the proper destination, but I live inside the journey. The daily is where I get refined, I die to self, I find myself, I give up what I think I want for the chance at what I want more.
If you’re fighting for your space or you have one established, the battle for time wisely spent is always present. Our life seasons change. May we look for our spaces to be and determine to grow to our best in them. If you’ve been knocked down (or knocked yourself down), reach back up and rejoin us on our way to better.
For everyone else…. keep on keeping on. Create and let someone else in.

Sincerely,
Laura Nutting
