Paint Globs and Stains

Fine Art, Painting

I threw on a pullover jacket and headed out to run some errands. While picking up a few items from the store, I am suddenly stopped by a stranger who asked, “Are you okay?!” “Am I okay...?” Confused, I start to wonder what is wrong. She tells me, “Your arm-it’s bleeding!” Aww, now I know what is going on. “I’m fine, thank you” I reply. I wasn’t in fact bleeding. There was simply a streak of alizarin crimson paint along my forearm.

This isn’t the only time something like this has happened to me and I would bet other artists completely understand. I pondered that encounter later that evening and then wondered how many fresh coffee stains I walked around with also. We may all be different in how neat and stain free our clothing and surroundings are, but don’t we all wear the evidence of our life? Doesn’t it permeate through our clothes, facial expressions, attitudes, and how we make others feel?

I have a difficult time digging through my t-shirts to find one without a paint mark or a coffee stain! What does it tell me? A few things. I obviously paint a lot and drink coffee daily. I would also rather stain a shirt than miss that mark on a canvas. But it also says that I am living life doing what I enjoy. I am bearing the fruit of what I do. We all bear some kind of fruit. What’s in my heart, mind and expressed in my life comes out and affects myself and others in some way.

Maybe it's time…

If you aren’t wearing the time stamped marks of another passion, may I encourage you check in with your Creator, and investigate that hobby from old? Or even a new idea that just keeps popping into your mind? And whatever it is, don’t hide the smile it brings. Be sure and share it with someone else along the way.

Sincerely,

Laura Nutting
